Let’s cut through the controversy! Chapter 5 kicked up a lot of dust, but what does it actually say about math education? This 2-day session will take a critical eye towards the promise of Chapter 5 and how we can cut through the politics and focus on supporting student success in mathematics. This PD will focus on two outcomes: (1) How build a mathematically rigorous, standalone data science class for high school students and (2) How data science can be integrated into regular math classes to improve engagement, relevance, and support existing learning outcomes in middle school math, algebra 1, and algebra 2.
