Developing Fluency, Understanding, and Number Sense TK-5
About the Event
What do we mean in math education when we say fluency and conceptual understanding? How do we help students achieve these important concepts? Fluency is often associated with the phrases “flexibility with strategies” and “being reasonably fast and accurate”. In an age of handheld computers (cell phones), fluency with facts and procedures must take a lesser position to conceptual understanding and mathematical structure and relationships. Although a focus on memorization has become secondary, it is vital to help students see relationships and patterns as they develop fluency and conceptual understanding. This three day professional learning opportunity will focus on routines and strategies that are proven to build number sense, develop understanding, and increase student access and agency in mathematics while also developing fact and procedural fluency. Strategies will focus on addressing the needs of English language learners and learning acceleration throughout the workshop.
